MIDWINTER (6.1.-22.3.)
Venture out into nature on a nippy day or enjoy the slopes or ski tracks when it isn’t quite as cold. If you’re looking for snow, this is the time for you as banks rise high and blizzards are common.
As the new year begins, the days are getting longer as the winter’s polar night slowly recedes. Although the polar night may still continue, light begins to actively push through the darkness, creating a unique atmosphere that cannot be experienced elsewhere.
In mid-winter, the snow banks rise to majestic heights and the snowiest time of the year downright invites you outside to take advantage of all the activity opportunities Lapland has to offer. The soft powder snow and the increasing light create a Lappish winter wonderland. Its amazing nature can be explored, for example, with snow shoes or gliding snow shoes, which are ideal to use on powder snow. In addition to marvelling the Lappish nature, you can also experience the thrill of speed with a reindeer ride, a husky safari or snow-sledding.
Midwinter in Lapland and the prolongation of the days are unparalleled, and are really worth taking the most out of.
SPRING WINTER (23.3-12.4.)
Early spring (March-April)
Light is everywhere and even though the weather is getting warmer, the slopes and ski-tracks are still open. This is an amazing time to venture on a nature trail to see and hear how the earth awakes.
Late winter is the best time to enjoy the fresh open air and unique atmosphere of Lapland. The sunlight gets to play on the shimmering surfaces of the snow banks again, as the darkness of the polar night recedes and the nature and locals slowly begin to wake up from their winter sleep.
Although spring means warmer days, the winter weather is at its best in late winter. The increasing amount of light and the waking nature make the outdoors inviting, and nature, getting ready for spring, can be marvelled in many different ways. You can certainly get away from your everyday life by for example skiing or sledding on shiny snow banks, while enjoying the pure nature of Lapland.
Especially in Northern Lapland, sunny winter weather can be enjoyed well into April. The beginning of spring, and the mysticism of the winter, make late winter in Lapland a magical experience.
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR (1.12.-5.1.)
Polar Night (November-December)
In early winter, daylight diminishes and the Polar Night takes hold. The twilight embodies the magical mystique of Lapland, and is ideal for cozying up indoors next to a fireplace and getting in tune with the stillness around.
Snowy fells and dark nights create a wonderful atmosphere for end-of-the-year celebrations. Enjoy the mysterious Lappish ambience, curled up in front of the warm fireplace with a teacup in your hand, surrounded by northern tranquility.
When the year is about to turn, it’s time to celebrate Christmas and New Year. What would be more idyllic than to celebrate Christmas in the home of Santa Claus in the shadow of Lapland’s fells. Lapland offers a lot of opportunities during the Christmas season, whether you prefer an active Christmas holiday in the midst of snow covered fells or a soothing break after a long autumn.
As the year approaches its end, the North prepares to greet the new year. The dark nights are perfect for hunting Northern Lights and on the last day of the year the dark night sky is filled with brilliant, colourful fireworks. The end of the year is a festive time in Lapland.
